Digital Arts

Digital Art is any art created or presented using digital technology. The first use of the term digital art was in the early 1980s when computer engineers devised a paint program which was used by the pioneering digital artist Harold Cohen. In the 1990s, thanks to improvements in digital technology, it was possible to download video onto computers, allowing artists to manipulate the images they had filmed with a video camera. Now we have taken digital art to all new heights and Mainland High School is contributing through Digital Photography, Digital Media, Digital Video, and Game Design. Mainland High School houses the Academy of Communication and Multimedia Technology where we specialize in the digital arts.

Digital Photography: Teacher - Tara Gardner

Digital photography has three levels this year. Every year the students are given opportunities to participate in community and nationwide contests. The Digital Photography students also take part in the our enterprise called, Buccaneer Photography, where we go out into the community and photograph events as well as school portraits. In Digital Photography we start off with basic cameras, including mobile devices, and then move into professional cameras as well as learn the multiple uses of Adobe Photoshop.

Digital Media: Teacher - Nikki Golub

Digital media has four levels and each year the students learn a new Adobe software connected to design. Digital Media students are also given opportunities to enter their work into community displays and contests as well as share their knowledge with other middle and elementary schools in our community. Some Digital Media students even go onto to work as interns during their junior and senior year at Mainland High School with local design firms.
